After the race finished, we were treated to bananas and (alcohol free) gluhwein to help recover. It was fantastic to be able to drink something warm and then go into a traditional tent and warm up with the real fire burning inside. One of the Ukrainian ladies staying in the same hotel saw me finish and took a photo so I'll try to add that over next few weeks. After a warm up and shower we went to the prizegiving ceremony. First place was about 1hr 17m - wow!
After prizegiving was an evening meal of dried fish, salad and bread - which did not sound great, but was actually fish with a spicy tomato sauce. It tasted great and I ate loads. Sat with Norwegians, Russians and even a welshman (although he lives in Oslo). The Norwegians came from Hammerfest and worked on Liquifying gas that comes from Barents Sea. Really interesting although sounds a pretty extreme life for most of the year.
The meal was followed by a party with plenty of music and the (expensive) beer and wine flowed freely. It was a great evening and met some really interesting people. I'll try to stay in touch.
Next stop Spitzbergen.
